Rating:
Body Glove’s Snap On Cover for the Motorola Droid 2 was the only third party case available for the device on launch day. This is the second holster that we’ve reviewed for the Droid 2.
Appearance:
The Snap On Cover is a hard plastic case for the Droid 2 that is designed to be used with an included belt clip. The case has a rivet on its back that can be removed if you prefer to use only the case itself.
The exterior of the Snap On Cover has a soft, spongy texture, and is decorated with a wavy dimpled pattern. The inside of the case is lined with felt. Overall the case’s appearance was not especially appealing to us, although it didn’t detract significantly from the design of the Droid 2.
The case weighs 40 grams without the clip, and 54 grams with the clip. The case adds between 4 and 6mm of thickness to the Droid 2.
The Snap On Cover’s back cover is made of thick plastic that should hold up well over time. The case’s front bezel is thin and flexible, and we didn’t have any issues with the bezel when uninstalling it from the Droid 2.
The rivet on the back of the Snap On Cover can be popped out of the case with a bit of force, but it doesn’t pop out when the case is installed on the Droid 2. The case’s clip appears to be sturdy, but over time we think that the clip’s plastic locking mechanism may wear out.
Usability:
The Snap On Cover snaps around the corners of the Droid 2. For the most part, the case fits the Droid 2 well, although we did notice a bit of give on the sides of the case’s bezel and we could feel the bezel creaking a bit when we held the phone tightly.
The spongy exterior of the Snap On Cover provides an excellent grip on the device. The case also has a ledge that makes it easy to hold the case with one hand. The rivet on the back of the case stays out of the way for the most part, but users with small hands may feel the rivet when holding the phone with one hand. The case works well when the Droid 2 is used in landscape mode, however, the case does sit closely to the top row of keys on the Droid 2’s keypad. This is an issue that we’ve seen with most Droid 2 cases.
To install the Snap On Cover on the belt clip, you simply side the rivet on the back of the case into the clip. The phone can rotate 360 degrees in the clip, and the clip holds the phone in position at 45 degree intervals. To remove the phone, you press a button on the top of the clip, and lift the phone up.
The Snap On Cover does not cover any of the Droid 2’s buttons or ports. Nothing is covered when the device is installed in the clip, either.
The Snap On Cover covers the sides and back of the Droid 2. The case’s soft spongy texture provides some cushioning from falls, as well as protection from scratches, scrapes and punctures. The case also has a ledge around the Droid 2’s screen, which prevents the screen from coming into contact with neighboring surfaces.
Since the clip attaches to the back of the case, the phone’s screen points outwards when installed in the clip. This makes a screen protector a good investment if you plan on using the clip.
Overall:
The Snap On Cover provides good protection for the Droid 2, although some users may be wary of using a clip that points the device’s screen outwards. The case’s soft exterior is comfortable to hold, but we did notice a bit of give on the sides of the case’s front bezel. The belt clip on the Snap On Cover works well, and unlike full holsters the belt clip is small and light when not in use.
For $30, the Snap On Cover is reasonably priced, and although it does not fit the Droid 2 as well as the Verizon Shell/Holster Combo, this case is a good option if you’re looking for a smaller, lighter holster for the device. Overall we give it a three star rating.
