Rating:
This review focuses on the Verizon Kickstand Snap-On Hard Cover case for the Motorola Droid 2. This is the only case with an integrated stand available for the Droid 2 on launch day.
Appearance:
The Kickstand Snap-On Hard Cover is a hard plastic case that is wrapped in leather. This gives the case a professional, classy look and feel that complements the Droid 2 well.
The Kickstand Snap-On Hard Cover features an integrated stand which stows into the case’s back when not in use. This design keeps the case slim, although there is a small bulge where the stand’s hinge is located.
The case weighs 34 grams, so it does add a bit of heft to the Droid 2. The case also adds between 5 to 6mm of thickness to the device.
The back of the Kickstand Snap-On Hard Cover is made of hard, rigid plastic and it should hold up well over time. The case’s front bezel is thin, but it flexes easily, and we didn’t have any concerns with it breaking when it was uninstalled from the Droid 2.
The stand on the back of the case is made out of metal, and appears to be very durable. The stand resists considerable pressure without bending, and the stand’s metal hinge also handled pressure well.
Usability:
The back cover of the Kickstand Snap-On Hard Cover fits snugly around the Droid 2. However, the sides of the case’s front bezel do not attach securely to the Droid 2’s screen. We could feel a lot of give when we gripped the device tightly, and the bezel also creaked as it moved around the Droid 2’s screen.
The leather exterior of the Kickstand Snap-On Hard Cover didn’t provide a very good grip on the device. However, the case does have a ledge around the Droid 2’s screen that makes it easy to hold the device with one hand. The case is comfortable to use with the Droid 2’s keypad extended, although like other cases the Kickstand Snap-On Hard cover does limit access to the top row of keys on the device.
To use the stand on the case, you simply pop it out from the back of the case. This will be easy for most users, but it can be difficult if you have large fingers or no fingernails. The stand props up the Droid 2 a 45 degree angle, which is good for viewing movies, pictures or reading emails. You can also extend the Droid 2’s keypad when its propped up by the stand.
The Kickstand Snap-On Hard Cover doesn’t cover any of the buttons on the Droid 2, and all ports on the device are easily accessible.
Protection:
The Kickstand Snap-On Hard Cover covers all four sides of the Droid 2, as well as the device’s back. The hard plastic case provides protection from scratches and scrapes, while the case’s soft leather exterior provides a bit of cushioning from falls, as well. There is a ledge around the Droid 2’s screen and camera, so both of those elements are protected from neighboring surfaces.
Overall:
The Kickstand Snap-On Hard Cover is an attractive case for the Droid 2 that protects the device well. The case’s integrated stand is also a big plus for frequent travelers who often use their phone to watch movies.
At $25, the case is competitively priced, but the case’s loose fitting sides were a constant annoyance for us. Overall, we give the case an average three star rating.
