Pros: Good fit, sturdy holster, good protection
Cons: Not particularly attractive
Rating:
This review focuses on Verizon’s Shell/Holster Combo for the Motorola Droid 2. This is one of two holsters available for the Droid 2 on launch day.
Appearance:
The Shell/Holster Combo consists of a two piece plastic shell and a holster that wraps around the front of the shell. The exterior of the case is covered with a cross hatched pattern, while the interior of the case has a matte finish.
By itself, the shell weighs 18 grams and with the holster the case weighs 52 grams. The shell adds between 2 to 3mm of thickness to the Droid 2.
The shell is made of hard plastic that appears to be quite durable. The case’s front bezel is a bit thin, but it is flexible and should hold up well over time.
The holster is also made of rigid plastic. The holster’s clip is held shut by a large piece of metal, rather than a spring, which should hold up well over time. The clip is solidly attached to the holster, as well.
Usability:
The shell snaps tightly around the Droid 2. The case fits the device well, and there is no gap between the case and the phone itself.
The exterior of the shell provides a good grip on the Droid 2, and the case’s tapered sides and ledge around the phone’s screen makes it easy to hold the device with one hand. The case also feels comfortable when used in a horizontal configuration, as well. However, like other cases, the shell does sit very closely to the top row of keys on the Droid 2’s keypad, which makes it somewhat difficult to press these keys.
The phone slides easily into the holster, with the camera pointing out. The holster does a good job of holding the case in place. The clip on the holster also rotates 180 degrees and can hold the phone at a variety of angles.
The shell doesn’t cover any of the Droid 2’s buttons or ports. When the case is in the holster, the side of the micro USB charging port is slightly obstructed by the holster, but all of the buttons on the sides and top of the Droid 2 are accessible.
Protection:
The shell does a good job of protecting the sides and back of the Droid 2. The case’s hard plastic exterior provides protection from scratches, scrapes and punctures, but does not provide much cushioning from falls. The case also has a ledge that protects the Droid 2’s camera and screen from coming into contact with neighboring surfaces.
The holster has a felt lining that protects the Droid 2’s screen. The holster leaves the Droid 2’s camera uncovered, however.
Overall:
The Shell/Holster Combo is a good choice if you’re looking for a holster for the Droid 2. The shell is thin and light, and it fits the Droid 2 well, while providing decent protection.
The holster wraps around the shell securely, and can be positioned at a variety of angles. The holster also appears to be quite durable.
At $30, the Shell/Holster Combo is reasonably priced, and overall we give the case and holster a four star rating.
