Verizon offers several Verizon-branded cases for the Motorola Droid 2, many of which are similar in look and design to the cases that the company released for the Droid X. In this review, we take a look at Verizon’s Snap-On Hard Cover case for the Motorola Droid 2.

Appearance:

The Snap-On Hard Cover is a hard plastic case for the Droid 2 that consists of a front bezel and back cover. The case has a faux carbon fiber exterior that gives the Droid 2 a slick, modern look, in our opinion.

The Snap-On Hard Cover weights 28 grams and adds about 5mm of thickness to the Droid 2.

Durability:

The back of the Snap-On Hard Cover is made of rigid plastic that appears to be quite durable. The case’s front bezel is somewhat thin, although it flexes enough to avoid breaking when its uninstalled from the device. The weak point on the Snap-On Hard Cover are the plastic nubs that hold the case around the Droid 2 – these nubs are small and appear to be fragile, and if they break off the case will not fit securely around the Droid 2.

IMG_1540Usability:

The back of the Snap-On Hard Cover snaps snugly around the Droid 2, however the case’s front bezel does not fit as well. There is a small gap between the bezel and the Droid 2, so the bezel creaked and moved as used the device. The bezel also made a rattling noise when the phone vibrated.

The Snap-On Hard Cover’s carbon fiber exterior provides a decent grip around the Droid 2. We also like the case’s tapered sides, as well as the case’s ledge around the Droid 2’s screen.  Again, however, the gap between the front bezel and the screen was an annoyance for us.

The case was comfortable to use in landscape mode.  But, like other cases, the Snap-On Hard Cover sits near the top row of keys on the Droid 2’s keypad, making it slightly difficult to press these keys.

The Snap-On Hard Cover doesn’t cover any of the buttons on the Droid 2, leaving all ports and buttons easily accessible.

Protection:

The Snap-On Hard Cover covers all four sides of the Droid 2, as well as the device’s back. The hard plastic shell provides good protection from scratches, scrapes and punctures, while the case’s soft faux carbon fiber exterior provides a bit of cushioning from falls. The case also has a ledge around the Droid 2’s screen and camera, so these elements don’t come into contact with surfaces below.

Overall:

We like the appearance of the Snap-On Hard Cover – the case’s faux carbon fiber exterior complements the Droid 2 well, while giving the device a modern look. The case also provides good protection for the Droid 2, although this comes at the cost of added heft and thickness.

The case’s loose fitting bezel was a distraction for us as we used the phone, however. The bezel constantly creaked and moved as we used the phone, which was a major annoyance for us.

This case is a decent option if you don’t mind its loose fitting bezel. For $25, however, we expected a much better fit from the Snap-On Hard Cover. Overall, we give the case a two and a half star rating.
